How to add YouTube videos to Windows Live: Group, Blog, Writer and Clubhouse posts

My friend Jen suggested that a “How to” with instructions to add YouTube videos was needed in Windows Live. I humbly submit the following in answer to Jen’s suggestion:

It is easy to add YouTube videos to your Windows Live Groups, Windows Live Spaces, Windows Live Writer and Windows Live Clubhouse posts:

First off, if you want to, you can customize the look of your YouTube video. Notice the text box that is labeled “Embed”? There is a blue star off to the right that opens up the customization options.

You can change the size, color, etc. Once you have decided on the look you want, copy the text that is in the Embed textbox. (Thanks go out to FedUpVideo for giving me permission to use his profile in this post)

To add YouTube video to Windows Live Groups posts, click on the HTML link to switch to source view, paste in the code between the two <DIV> tags, and click on HTML to finish your post:

To add YouTube video to a Windows Live Spaces Blog post written within the your Space, click on the HTML link to switch to source view, paste in the code between the two <DIV> tags, and click on HTML to to switch back to write the rest of your post. (Windows Live Writer is a much easer way to write your blogs.I suggest you give it a try):

To add YouTube video to Windows Live Writer posts, click on “Source”, paste in the code between the two <DIV> tags, and click on “Edit” to write the rest of your post.

(Mandy reminded me that there is another way to add video to Windows Live Writer by clicking Insert/Video in the pull-down menu or Taskpane. But, we both get more reliable results using the “Source” view.)

The Windows Live Clubhouse recently revised the How to include video page. The new instructions enable the video to be viewed within the Clubhouse. I have copied the information on that page below to save you a special trip to that page:

How to include video

Embedding Your Video

Using Windows Live Writer, it’s fast and easy to add your favorite videos to your blog posts.

For security reasons, videos embedded in your posts are automatically removed when your blog is pulled into the Clubhouse. But there’s a quick step you can take to embed those videos to display in the Clubhouse by simply adding this special HTML link to your blog above your video.

The format of the HTML link is (using YouTube as an example):

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxxxx" rel="clubhouse video">Video Name</a>

The highlighted portion of the link above is required. Before you post video to the Clubhouse, please verify that you have inserted the hyperlink directly above the video.

Inserting Video Tags with Windows Live Writer

To create a link in Windows Live Writer to your video on YouTube (or other popular video sites), type the desired title above the video. (In the example below, it’s “Is that Windows 7?!?!”) Then select the text and click the insert hyperlink icon on the toolbar; this will open the Edit Hyperlink window.

Insert Hyperlink

Enter the URL to the video in the text field. Click the Advanced button on the bottom right. Then type clubhouse video or clubhousevideo in the Rel: text box.

For information on inserting video using blogging platforms other than Windows Live Spaces, please consult your platforms documentation. Please note that you will need to insert the link above the video in order for it to render on a Windows web site.

… End Quote …

And now, to celebrate the fact that we all know how to add videos to all posts, let’s listen to a song made just from sounds in Windows 7 (This song was created my FedUpVideo as shown above):

(The Clubhouse must block some YouTube formatting. The video frame matches my Space color, but it does not show in the my Clubhouse post.)

Just one thing, you can add video, from youtube, or other places, via writer by clicking on "video" in "insert" in the Task pane, but I have always had a problem getting this to work for me, and resort to using "source" is this why you didn\’t include it?

Mandy: I gave you credit for reminding me. Let me know if you want the link to your space removed. X

@ Everybody: The formatting looks funky in my Clubhouse post. The side by side youtube pics showing before and after clicking the customize dealie are out of alignment. Since it looks fine in my space and in Writer, I don\’t know how to fix it. X

Looks OK now. Hmm. I hate glitches. X

This is great, X. Here\’s my "cheat sheet" for entering vids into WL Blogs: find the one you want, go up to the URL, right-click and copy it. Back in Writer, place cursor where you want the vid to appear, right-click and Paste URL content. In mine, it puts the video straight in.;-)Good read, this.

Thanks X, I really don\’t like using the insert video, in writer, I always have trouble with it and always use the source code, or go online and publish there.

@ Jen, All that does Jen is put a link in to the place where the video is, is doesn\’t put the actual video on you blog. The URL address is just the link to the page.

Strange. The Clubhouse must block some YouTube formatting. The video frame matches my Space color, but it does not show in the my Clubhouse post.
